Hiring Movers Cheaper than DIY

December 24, 2011

A lot of things are expensive in Chicago. It’s a big city. Food, gas, rent – everything costs a little more than it needs to. It’s natural to try to save money, but I can tell you from experience: trying to move on your own is going to end up costing you more than just hiring some Chicago Movers.

Let’s look at the costs associated with moving. The first thing people think of is the truck. Obviously that is a big expense. Generally you want to err on the side of one that is a little too big for you, rather than a little too small. A lot of people try to scrape by with a small one and that just leads to broken items or extra runs. And with any size vehicle you will be paying for the fuel you use. Moving vans and trucks always have low gas mileage.

Beyond that, think of the other costs. Your friends will help you “for free” but it isn’t really free, is it? Only a jerk would ask their friends to help them move and not buy them dinner afterward. You’re not going to cook at home obviously since everything is boxed up. So you take them out for something cheap like pizza, but with (let’s say) four friends, yourself and your partner, and beer for everyone – that is easily more than $100 on top of the truck and the gas.

When you hire Chicago movers all these costs – the labor, the fuel, the truck, the equipment – are rolled into one price. It may seem expensive at first but for how much hassle it saves you it is worth it.
